Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding assistant that you run from your laptop's command line. You describe a task in plain English, and it reads your files, writes and edits code, and runs the commands to get the job done. For a hospitality business that means you can automate real back-office work, from tidying a supplier spreadsheet to building a small internal tool, without hiring a developer.
This guide explains what Claude Code is in practical terms, what it can realistically do for a bar, restaurant or hotel, what you need to get started, and how the Sipflow AI Academy teaches it hands-on.
What Claude Code actually is
Claude Code is a program you install on your own computer. Instead of a chat window in your browser, it lives in the terminal, the text-based control panel that every Mac and Windows machine already has. You type what you want in ordinary language, and Claude Code does the work on the files that are on your laptop.
It is "agentic", which is a fancy way of saying it does not just answer questions. It takes steps. Ask it to clean up a messy stock list and it will open the file, make the changes, and show you what it did so you can approve or undo it. You stay in control: it only touches the files you point it at, and it asks before running anything that changes your system.
Three things set it apart from a normal chatbot:
It works with your real files
A browser chatbot can only see what you paste into it. Claude Code works directly on the documents, spreadsheets and folders on your machine, so you are not copying text back and forth all day.
It takes multi-step actions
You can give it a goal, not just a question. "Turn these three supplier PDFs into one price comparison" is a task it will plan and carry out step by step.
You decide what it sees
Claude Code only reads the files you let it read, and the connection to Anthropic is encrypted. You control what you share, which matters when you are working with commercial data.
What it does for a hospitality business
The point is not to turn you into a programmer. It is to take the repetitive, fiddly jobs off your plate. A few realistic examples from our courses:
- Clean up messy data. Merge three suppliers' price lists into one tidy comparison, or standardise a stock sheet that five people have edited differently.
- Build small internal tools. A quick rota calculator, a par-level checker, a tip-split sheet, built to fit how your venue actually works rather than bent around off-the-shelf software.
- Turn documents into something usable. Pull the key figures out of a stack of invoices, or convert a supplier PDF into a spreadsheet you can sort and filter.
- Draft and format text. Menu descriptions, a staff handbook section, a standard supplier email, written in your own tone and ready to edit.
None of this needs a technical background. You describe the outcome you want, check the result, and keep the bits that help. The time saved adds up fast when a weekly two-hour admin job becomes a ten-minute one.
What you need to get started
The barrier to entry is lower than most people expect:
- A laptop, Mac or Windows, that you already use for work.
- A Claude account. A Pro plan is enough to follow along; teams handling contracts or staff records usually prefer a Team plan, where Anthropic does not train on your data and your business stays the data controller.
- A task worth automating. The best way to learn is to bring a real job from your own venue, a report you dread, a spreadsheet nobody wants to own.
You do not need to install anything complicated on your own before a course. We set that up together on day one, and you leave able to repeat it.
A quick word on your data
Claude Code runs on your own laptop, and only what you type plus the files you choose to share are sent to Anthropic, over an encrypted connection. You decide what it sees. For sensitive items such as guest card details or staff records, the simple rule we teach is to leave them out or anonymise them first. You can read how Anthropic handles data on their own data usage and privacy pages.
How Sipflow's AI Academy teaches it
Reading about a tool and using it are different things. In the Sipflow AI Academy you learn Claude Code by doing, on a real task from your own business, with a trainer in the room. Over two half-days we cover the setup, the handful of commands that matter, and the safe habits that keep your data yours, then you leave with a tool or a workflow you built yourself.
If you want a feel for the payoff first, try our AI savings calculator to estimate the hours a small amount of automation could give back to your week. When you are ready to go deeper, the Academy turns that estimate into something you can actually use.
